What can we do? Our servers come to the area at 10 a.m. and prepare the tables for the mid-day meal. The tables are set up in the park. Food is delivered by the cooks between 10 and 10:30. Servers wear plastic gloves (provided by Cafe of Life) and arrange the table with the sign-in sheet first, then napkins and utensils, main dish, vegetable, salad, bread, condiments, drinks. Either Yadi, our Cafe manager, or the head cook is in charge of the operation and will help you get organized. After the blessing at 10:30, our clients come in an orderly line to receive the dinner.
How often would we be asked to serve? It would be wonderful if you would agree to take one day a month, but Cafe of Life remains flexible.
How long do we stay? Servers are asked to stay until closing. After our clients have eaten, the clean-up is accomplished quickly with many hands making light work! Our clients are very good about picking up anything left in the park or community center. The tables are sanitized and put back in the van and you are ready to leave.
Who are the clients? The majority of our clients are Spanish speaking neighbors. If you know a few words of Spanish, it's a plus. However, pointing is a really good alternative!
